11. Prevent cancer
Cancer cells are formed when the body’s cells break from the normal cycle of growth and death and begin to grow uncontrollably, giving rise to harmful and sometimes life-threatening tumours in different parts of the body. Green tea leaves contain so-called ‘bioactive’ compounds, counting green tea antioxidants, which act on our body in multiple beneficial ways including preventing cancer. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant catechin in green tea. EGCG is also the most effective green tea antioxidant. They help prevent cancer cell growth by lowering cellular levels of protein that cancer cells need to grow properly. It also blocks enzymes that cancer cells need for growth.
