12 Home Remedies for a Cold Sore

2. Keep Things Clean

The herpes virus is very contagious and can easily be spread to your eyes, nose and other parts of your body (cold sores are not confined to the lips) by contact. Wash your hands very well after treating your sore and use a new cotton bud or ball each time you apply any remedy. Although it’s hard to stop picking at the scab when it’s itchy, that’s the last thing you should do. A good idea is to carry a tissue dampened with some disinfectant in a small plastic bag with you, so that you can disinfect your fingers if you do touch the cold sore. You should also consider replacing your toothbrush after the sore has healed, as it could be a source of re-infection.
