4. Tea Tree Oil
As soon as you notice any of the symptoms of a cold sore starting, apply a dab of tea tree oil, using a cotton bud to gently coat the spot. Later, when the sore breaks open, gently remove the crust that forms, caused by the drying fluid. Do this by gently rubbing it with a cotton bud soaked in warm water and then apply tea tree oil. Tea tree oil contains powerful antibacterial and antiviral compounds that help to reduce the swelling and speed the healing of a cold sore. Take care not to ingest the tea tree oil by licking your lips as it tastes terrible. Tea tree oil can be applied full strength to the sore, but if you have a sensitive skin it may be advisable to dilute it with distilled or filtered water. Keep applying every few hours each day until the sore has healed completely.
